Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL), A Company of Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources is the pioneer in discovery and production of Natural Gas, Condensate, NGL and petroleum products such as Octane, Petrol (RON 89), Kerosene, Diesel and LPG in the country.
The Company has a glorious history of production and sales of natural gas which dates back in 1960 under its predecessor, erstwhile Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), which discovered natural gas at well no. Sylhet-1 at Haripur Gas Field under Jaintapur Upazilla in the District of Sylhet in 1955. It was the first discovered natural gas field in the country. In 1960, commercial production of natural gas commenced for the first time in the country by supplying about 4 MMSCFD gas to Chhatak Cement Factory. In 1961, supply of gas from well no. Sylhet-3 commenced to Fenchuganj Fertilizer Factory.
After liberation, the Company was renamed as Bangladesh Petroleum Limited (BPL). On 9th August 1975, 5 (five) gas fields were purchased from Shell Oil Company. Amongst them were SGFL’s two (2) gas fields namely Rashidpur Gas Field and Kailashtilla Gas Field. The Company was incorporated on 8th May, 1982 as Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL).
On 23rd December, 1986, the long cherished dream of the country came true with the first discovery of Oil from well no. Sylhet-7 at Haripur Gas Field. At present, the Company has 5 gas fields namely Haripur Gas Field, Kailashtilla Gas Field, Rashidpur Gas Field, Beanibazar Gas Field and Chhatak Gas Field under its umbrella and producing Natural Gas, Condensate and NGL from its 14 gas wells.
Beside gas production, the Company has also glorious history of production of petroleum products such as Octane, Petrol (RON 89), Kerosene, Diesel and LPG. In 1961, 68 BPD Condensate Fractionation unit was installed along with the natural gas process plant at Haripur Gas Field. In 1983, 300 BPD Condensate Fractionation unit was installed along with the natural gas process plant at Kailashtilla Gas Field.
Rashidpur Condensate Fractionation Plant (RCFP) was completed and was inaugurated by Honourable Prime Minister Shaikh Hasina on 30th April 2012 at Rashidpur under Bahubal Upazilla of Habiganj District. In 2018, 4000 BPD Condensate Fractionation Plant (CFP) was installed at Bargaon, Bahubal Upazilla in the district of Habiganj. In 2021, 3000 BPD Catalytic Reforming Unit (CRU) was installed in the same campus of 4000 BPD CFP to produce Octane and LPG from Petrol.
Upon approval from Eenegy & Mineral Resources Division, Kailashtilla LPG Plant (Unit 1 & 2) of Rupantarita Prakritik gas Company Limited was handed over to SGFL on 30th May 2024. The plant was put back in operation on 2nd June 2024 and has been running to till date.
Customers of Natural Gas are Jalalabad Gas Transmission & Distribution System Limited (JGTDSL), Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited (BGDCL), Paschimanchal Gas Company Limited (PGCL) and Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL).
For petroleum products, customers are Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and its marketing companies namely Padma Oil Company Limited, Meghna Petroleum Limited, Jamuna Oil Company Limited and LP Gas Limited. Besides, some condensate (beyond government allocation) is sold to Aqua Refinery Limited.
